I regularly use XMPP with family and friends and it's alright. I'd like to add that XMPP does support voice and video calls as long as the server supports TURN and you have a compatible client like blabber.im (Android) or Gajim (Linux), but it's clearly not the focus. But once it's set up, calls work very well.
